Social media management is one of the most common reasons that businesses hire internet marketing specialists. It takes someone with a deep understanding of how these platforms work to get you the likes, clicks, and followers that comprise a successful campaign. It’s not easy. With so many different platforms out there, it can seem bewildering for someone who is not utterly ingrained in the culture and habits of the users, all of whom are potential customers for you.
Are These Platforms Becoming More Alike?
Those who study these platforms and try to optimize and manipulate them for business purposes have spoken about a trend. It seems that these platforms are becoming more similar to one another. If you look at the layout of Facebook, it has begun to look more like Instagram. The Whatsapp interface has started to resemble Snapchat. Why are these networks becoming less graphically diverse? And what does it mean from an advertising standpoint?
One possible reason is that most social media users are on more than one platform. Borrowing functionality and appearance makes sense because then the interface appears more user-friendly. A new user of one platform may think “ah, this looks familiar,” as they sign up for a new one. As for what effect this has on businesses that are looking toward social media for ad purposes and marketing campaigns, the answer is still unclear. Platforms becoming more like each other seems to indicate that the user is looking for what is immediately recognizable. But does that apply to the content as well? Does that mean similar sentiments should be expressed on Twitter, and that an instantly identifiable blog format should be used on Facebook? Alternatively, should you try and deviate from this behavior to make yourself stand out?
There does not seem to be a ready-made answer to this question, so only time and experimentation will tell. There seems to be no doubt that social media is maintaining its popularity. What remains to be seen is how best it can be used on an ongoing basis for businesses who are trying to spread the word regarding their services and products.
